Uncommon benign vascular tumors that may occur anywhere in the GI tract

Histologic Classification
-Capillary : thin-walled, blood-filled spaces lined by endothelial cells
-Cavernous : large blood-filled spaces or sinuses lined by endothelial cells
focal calcification, thrombi, hyalinization represent degeneration

Spectrum of radiologic appearances.
-pedunculated intraluminal polypoid masses / infiltrative submucosal growth
-solitary, multifocal, or diffuse

Small Bowel
-Most common site of GI hemangiomas –  jejunum
-Plain : phleboliths
-CT : mass contiguous with the small intestine
      multiple, punctate phleboliths
-DDx: Lymphoma, metastatic disease,
primary peritoneal malignancies,
fibromatosis, inflammatory pseudotumor

Colon
-2nd most common site –  rectosigmoid
-Phleboliths common and useful finding
-CT : transmural thickening of the involved segment,
phleboliths, vascular engorgement within the adjacent mesentery, enhancement IV contrast material
-DDx: benign and malignant masses, inflammatory and infectious disorders; carcinoma and strictures from diverticulitis, ischemia, or radiation
